Single-electron Tunneling

چکیده
The charge stored on a capacitor is not quantized: it consists of polarization charges generated by displacing the electron gas with respect to the positive lattice ions and can take arbitrary magnitudes. The charge transfer across a tunnel junction, however, is quantized in units of the electron charge (singleelectron tunneling), and may be suppressed due to the Coulomb interaction (Coulomb blockade). These simple facts lay the foundation for a new type of electronic device called single-electron tunneling (SET) devices. Coulomb blockade was first suggested back in 1951 by Gorter [123], who explained earlier experiments [164]. It remained largely unnoticed until, almost 40 years later, Fulton and Dolan built a transistor based on single-electron tunneling [109]. After introducing the concept of Coulomb blockade in Section 9.1, we will discuss basic single-electron circuits, in particular the double barrier and the single-electron transistor, in Section 9.2. Some examples and applications are given in Section 9.3.

Room Temperature Hydrogen Sensor Based on Single-Electron Tunneling Between Palladium Nanoparticles
In this paper, we present the results of single-electron tunneling in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal closed packed arrays of palladium nanoparticles. After inspecting the emergence of Coulomb blockade phenomena, we demonstrate the possibilities of using these arrays as a single-electron tunneling based hydrogen sensor. We assumed arrays of palladium nanoparticles with diameters of 3.5 and 6...

In this paper, to understand the concept of coupling, molecule density of states that coupled to the metal electrodes will be explained then, based on this concept, a weak and strong coupling for the molecules attached to the metal electrodes will be described. Capacitance model is used to explore the connection of addition energy with the Electron affinity and the ionization energy of the mole...
متن کاملSingle-Electron Tunneling Devices
Single-electron tunneling devices can detect charges much smaller than the charge of an electron. This enables phenomenally precise charge measurements and it has been suggested that large scale integration of single-electron devices could be used to construct logic circuits with a high device packing density. Here the operation of the two basic types of single-electron tunneling transistors is...
متن کاملSelective Bond Breaking of Single Iodobenzene Molecules with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip
Controlled step-by-step dissociation of single iodobenzene molecules has been performed at Cu(111) step-edges using tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip at 12 K. We show that the threshold tunneling electron energies to break a single bond inside a polyatomic molecule can be determined by using I-V spectroscopy of single molecules. Electron energies of 1.5±0.1 eV a...
